24. Freedom Seekers: the African Experience in North America
Readings and Conversation
Karolyn Smardz Frost
Linda Spalding
Moderator Anita Jack-Davies
GG Award-winning authors both, biographer Karoyln Smardz-Frost and novelist Linda Spalding bring to life the extraordinary experiences of freedom seekers and those on both sides of the border who aided African refugees from the US. Danger and difficulty tested the courage and beliefs of both. Anita Jack-Davies leads a discussion of the inherent drama of the freedom seekers’ story, whether true or fictional, why this story has been mostly excluded from our literary tradition, and asks Karolyn and Linda how they see themselves, and how, as white women telling these stories, they are seen by African-Canadians.
