Join us for a thoughtful conversation with Shelagh Rogers and the Johnson family exploring the life, work, and teachings of beloved Indigenous author, lawyer and storyteller Harold R. Johnson.

Harold R. Johnson (1957–2022) was born and raised in northern Saskatchewan and was a member of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation. He served in the Canadian Navy and worked in mining and logging before graduating from Harvard Law School and becoming a Crown prosecutor.

Johnson was the author of five works of fiction and five works of nonfiction, including Firewater: How Alcohol Is Killing My People (and Yours), which was a finalist for a Governor General’s Literary Award.

Rooted in the spirit of visiting, this conversation invites audiences to slow down, listen, share stories and reflect on the relationships and responsibilities that shape how we come together. Rather than simply being a formal discussion, this event creates space for conversation, reflection, and the sharing of knowledge and experiences.

As part of the 2026 Art of Visiting: National Indigenous Presenters Gathering, this event reflects the Gathering’s broader focus on creating meaningful opportunities to connect, learn, share stories, and build relationships through the arts and through visiting.
