Cyber-bullying seminar

As part of the Grand Theatre School Performance Series, The Grand Theatre is presenting 2 sold-out shows of “Tagged”. Performed by the renowned theatre company for young audiences, Green Thumb Theatre, “Tagged” will be performed for 1500 grade 7 and 8 students on Monday, January 20 at the Grand Theatre.

The harsh realities of cyber-bullying come to light in Green Thumb Theatre’s "Tagged" by playwright Dave Deveau. The anonymous online world gives us permission to say and do things we would never do in real life. But where do we draw the line between fun and maliciousness? As an officer investigates Jerri and Webber, two young adults, in the incessant online harassment of a fellow student, not all is as it appears to be. Do these teens actually understand the consequences of their actions? Or have they even caught the right people? How responsible are we for the words that we type and what they lead others to do? Torn from the headlines, “Tagged” dissects the dangerous potential for harm that exists between social media and young minds.

In response to the overwhelming community need to explore this topic, the City of Kingston’s Cultural Services Department will be offering an in depth discussion on cyber-bullying to the community on the afternoon of Monday, January 20 at 4pm at the Grand Theatre. Featuring Dr. Wendy Craig, Constable Terri Kennedy of the Kingston police and several local youth, the aim of this discussion is to provide information to educators, parents and students on cyber ethics, social media and the law. Presented in part by The Students Commission of the Centre of Excellence for Youth Engagement.
