Three-time Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter and United Nations Ambassador Dee Dee Bridgewater is bringing her soulful sound to the Grand Theatre.
Paying tribute to Lady Day, Bridgewater will revive such Billie Holiday classics as God Bless the Child, Strange Fruit and Lady Sings the Blues as she performs To Billie with Love – A Celebration of ‘Lady Day’ at the Grand Theatre on Saturday, March 24 at 7:30pm.
No stranger to bringing life to a legend, Bridgewater, in 1986 was seen as Billie Holiday in the musical Lady Day, for which role she was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award. Bridgewater has also performed on Broadway in the musical The Wiz. For her role as Glinda the Good Witch she won a Tony Award in 1975 as "best featured actress", and the musical also won the 1976 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
Her 1997 tribute album Dear Ella won her the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album, and the 1998 album Live at Yoshi's was also worth a Grammy nomination.
In October of 1999, Bridgewater was appointed FAO Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations and since then has acted as an active and committed FAO advocate during various television programmes broadcast in particular by Radio France Internationale, Fox Morning News in New York etc.
In August 2006, Bridgewater visited FAO field projects in Mali. Further to this mission covered widely by the media, Dee Dee recorded the album Read Hearth – A Malian Project, and decided to donate a percentage of the income of her Malian Project worldwide tour to FAO.
