A Comedy Show Throwdown: Are You Stand-up or Improv?

Vote and you are entered to win 2 tickets to your choice of shows:

Jim Belushi & The Chicago Board of Comedy or Just for Laughs Live Hosted by Mike Macdonald.

If you are looking for a hilarious night out, then these two incredibly funny shows coming to the Grand Theatre are for you. The only question to ask is: which comedy style suits you best - stand-up or improv?

Stand-up comedy is what many comedians are known for and if you don’t know why, here is your chance to finally find out! Humour is main attraction of the tales told by these stand-up comics. So if you like hearing a funny story or two, then these comedians have got many amusing ones to tell you! Take a break from your day and let someone else do the standing up for once, while you have a seat and enjoy a wildly entertaining stand-up comedy show.

Enjoy a night full of laughs and entertainment on April 9th at the Grand Theatre with Just for Laughs Live, back for this year’s Ontario tour. Featuring four of the best stand-ups straight from the world’s largest and most prestigious comedy Festival, the comedy jokes and stories will be flowing, cracking up audiences show after show. With host Mike MacDonald back on his feet after a successful liver transplant, this Canadian Comic Legend Award winner is sure to lead the show down a path full of giggle fits. Joining MacDonald are featured comics Louie star and Just For Laughs Comedy Tour alumnus, Robert Kelly, who has been winning over audiences for the last 18 years; Cristela Alonzo, who has appeared on Conan, Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham and Gabriel Iglesias Presents Stand Up Revolution; and Arthur Simeon, who not just your typical Torontonian-by-way-of-Kampala, Uganda comedian but also a gifted and enchanting storyteller. If you are a fan of the Just for Laughs TV shows, then this live version full of entertainers is right up your alley.

For those who are looking for an unexpected burst of laughter and an opportunity to join in on the fun, improv comedy may be the best fit for you. With audience participation and input, you not only get to laugh along with the crowd but you might even get to add your own hint of funny for a sweet turn of events on the improve stage! Always hilariously spontaneous, you never know what you are going to expect with improv comedy, except that it’s going to be a fun, good time.

Jim Belushi & The Chicago Board of Comedy will be at the Grand Theatre on May 5th to liven up the comedic scene. Veteran of Saturday Night Live and Second City, Jim Belushi is going back to his improv roots in this new show featuring members of improv sketch group The Chicago Board of Comedy. After eight seasons helming ABC's According to Jim, Belushi opted for a new challenge, one that sees him create a new show every night. Accompanying Belushi are Robert Belushi, Larry Joe Campbell, Jon Barinholtz and Brad Morris, all of whom are downright entertaining and classically trained professional improvisers.

"We are not stand-up comedians,” Belushi explains. “Our show is not a passive, sit-back-and-watch experience. Most of the fun we have on stage comes from our inclusion of the audience we get suggestions from them to begin each scene we perform, and in certain instances, bring them on stage with us to add to our performance. It’s less a show and more a party. At least it feels like one to me. This group of actors brings me right back to how I started out in comedy maybe that’s why we have so much fun doing it."

If this type of fun is what you’re looking for, then this improv show is just for you and it is sure to bring lots of surprising laughs.

Any fan of comedy is sure to enjoy both these shows so whichever one you choose is up to you. If you still can’t decide, then why not attend both? Either way you are sure to have some good laughs and a grand ole time!
