Big Dig update for Thursday, January 14

  • Crews have been focusing on service excavations in the first two blocks of Princess Street, between Bagot Street and Sydenham Street. The majority of services have been completed between Bagot and Montreal, with crews focusing next week on services between Montreal and Sydenham.
  • In early February the contractor anticipates moving into the third block of Princess Street (between Sydenham and Clergy) with service excavations. This block of Princess Street will remain open with a single lane of traffic, and some on-street parking will be lost to accommodate the work.
  • The pedestrian walkway between the Chown parking garage and the Grand Theatre is now open for its extended hours. Beginning today, the walkway will be open between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday for pedestrian access to Princess Street. These extended hours will be available until the re-opening of Princess Street. For Sundays, the GAP is kindly allowing downtown shoppers to use their back access at the Chown parking garage to access Princess Street during normal store hours (12 p.m. to 5 p.m.).

The Princess Street Reconstuction
As part of the City of Kingston's Downtown Action Plan, the third phase of the Princess Street reconstruction is now underway. Businesses are open and accessible during construction, including the Grand Theatre. Portions of Montreal, Sydenham and Clergy streets will also be reconstructed as part of this project. Princess St. will be initially be closed from Bagot to Montreal.  Work will continue moving up the street toward Clergy. Princess Street is scheduled to reopen to vehicles on July 1.
