About KING & I
The Kingston Meistersingers will be performing Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical "The King and I", for ten production dates at the Octave Theatre, 711 Dalton Ave, starting on Thursday November 18th. The King and I is based on the book "Anna and the King of Siam" by Margaret Landon. The story was derived from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, who became school teacher to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. Leonowens' book, The English Governess of the Siaimese Court, was autobiographical. The musical boasts familiar songs such as "Whistle a Happy Tune", "Getting To Know You", "Something Wonderful", "Shall We Dance" and is fun for the whole family.
The musical originally opened on Broadway in 1951, and ran for 1,246 performances, winning the Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Actor (Yul Brenner), and Best Actress (Gertrude Lawrence) along with other awards. The musical was made into a popular film in 1956, for which Yul Brenner won an Oscar for Best Actor. There were also numerous stage revivals including 1996, starring Lou Diamond Phillips as the King.
The production features Tim Torgerson as The King, and Lucy Vanderhelm as Anna Leonowens. Also appearing is Becky Kirby as Lady Thiang, Jack Francis as Kralahome, Connor Behan as Phra Alack, Eric Sturgeon as Prince Chulalongkhorn, Joel Fisset as Louis. Bill Collom plays Captain Orton and Daryl Notely plays Lt. Edward Ramsey. Featured as the secret Burmese lovers, Stephaine Drouin portrays Tuptim, with Danny Young, as Lun Tha. The cast also boasts of Royal Children, several Royal Wives, Royal Dancers and Royal Guards and a host of spectacularly costumed chorus.
The production's Director is Megan Scarborough . Assistant Director and Stage Manager is Alysha Bernstein with Choreographer Meredith Busteed. Musical Director Lu Yang, Costumes by Linda Bates and Marta McDonald, Producer Jack Francis, Tech Director Kevin Tanner.
