About Grieg, Haydn & A Little Schnittke Too!
Grieg: Holberg Suite
Schnittke: Concerto Grosso No. 1
Haydn: Symphony No. 85
Come for the Haydn and Grieg; stay for the Schnittke. Haydn's Symphony No. 85 is the fourth of the six Paris Symphonies. As it was a favourite piece of Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France at the time, it was nicknamed La Reine. The afternoon will also include Grieg's delightful Holberg Suite, recognized critically as equal to his famous Peer Gynt Suite. On the same program is Concerto Grosso No. 1 by Alfred Schnittke, the Russian composer who is "becoming wildly trendy" according to Alex Ross, the music critic for the New Yorker.
Glen Fast, Conductor
David Stewart, Violin & Guest Conductor

About One Yellow Rabbit and Rheostatics
Written by Dave Bidini
Directed by Blake Brooker
Original music composed and performed live by Rheostatics
As exhilarating as winning game seven, more off-the-wall than Don Cherry's fashion sense, and naughty enough to draw a five-minute major, Five Hole presents a suite of engrossing, tender and hilarious stories about the steamy underbelly of our national sport.
A minor leaguer endures a passionate crush on his team's lone female player. An NHL goalie is tight with his teammate, the league's leading scorer, but dreams of getting MUCH tighter. A star on a scoreless streak turns to a magical salve to restore his winning touch. These and other tales make up this scintillating look at hockey with its clothes off.

About Side Man
This lovely and poignant memory play is set in 1953 and travelling to 1985 unfolds through the eyes of Clifford, the only son of Gene, a jazz trumpet player, and Terry, an alcoholic mother. It alternates between their New York City apartment and a music club. Gene's music career on a big-band circuit crumbles with the advent of Elvis Presley and rock-and-roll. For Gene, music is not just a job, it is his life. When the adult Clifford visits Gene in a run down jazz club after years of separation, he asks the old man to play his mother's favourite song, the old standard "Why Was I Born?" Clifford then asks, "Dad, why was I born?" It becomes Clifford's last, heart-breaking plea for his father's love.
A drama by Warren Leight. Festival Entry.

About The Braid/Murley/Davidson Quintet
The Braid/Murley/Davidson Quintet. Young alto saxophonist Tara Davidson has been attracting much attention since she graduated from the Humber College music program a few years ago and has surrounded herself with a stellar band including Mike Murley, David Braid, Jim Vivian, and Ian Froman. Mike Murley most likely needs no introduction, but if you haven't heard him play he is one of the hardest swinging and most melodic tenor players since Sonny Rollins. Pianist David Braid has been in Kingston a number of times over the last few years and is consistently an interesting and questing musician.

About Johnny Reid
If Johnny Reid's music defies easy definition it's because the stories he tells have more than their fair share of miles on them. From Scotland, to Canada, to Nashville, the ground he's covered lends a depth of soul to his songs that sets them apart.
Driven by his love of music and family, Kicking Stones showcases Reid's no nonsense country sensibilities, mining the same deep well of personality and charm that made his award winning debut, Born to Roll, a breakout success. It's a far more personal record, says the Scottish born, Canadian bred, singer/songwriter. "I just want people to know I do this because I love to write and sing, and above everything, to take care of the people I love."
Interest grew in Johnny's unique voice over the life of his debut record as songs from Born To Roll hit the top twenty repeatedly. 'Missing an Angel' took the #1 spot on CMT's Chevy top twenty. Johnny also garnered nominations for 5 - 2006 CCMA awards and took three, including Single Of The Year and Rising Star Of The Year. And was awarded the 2008 CCMA male vocalist of the year. When Kicking Stones dropped in the spring of 2007, fans new and old have gotten to hear and see why, all over again making this album go platinum.
