About Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba

The all-female company of beautiful and technically superb dancers performs "with amazing unanimity" (New York Times) and with "sheer technical finesse" (Chicago Sun-Times) under the inspired creative direction of dancer-choregrapher Lizt Alfonso. Dance Cuba fuses the rapidly clacking heels of the flamenco, with the flowing grace of classical ballet, added to the hot passion of Afro-Cuban dance with a touch of jazz featuring live musicians. Altogether it is exciting, riveting — and highly sensual. And as the dance critic in El Paso TX said: "If you ever get a chance to see this company, jump on it!"

Delivered with modern day sound and lighting it creates the best of the 70's/80's rock era, taking audiences back in time.

Queen songs are anthems, the band legendary and Freddie Mercury iconic! Queen - It's a Kinda Magic transcends the void of reality and make-believe. About The Cedar Tavern Singers AKA The Phonorealistes

Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre, in association with Apple Crisp Arts, is proud to present Friday Night Flux with The Cedar Tavern Singers AKA The Phonoréalistes, the conceptual art-ernative folk rock duo of Mary-Ann McTrowe and Daniel Wong (Lethbridge, AB). Sometime in the distant past around the year 2006, these two individuals of musi-artistic temperament were summoned to the mountainous regions of the north and, while enduring not only the harsh climes, but also bear, elk, and T-rex attacks on a regular basis, a voice of a sub-sub-genre of musical art was forged. In the majestic Southern Continental Ranges of the Canadian Rockies, the two intrepid heroes united to fight the good fight and to sing the good song (and occasionally the bad song) in recitals that are part performance art, part art history lecture and part pop song. Through their actions, McTrowe and Wong are engaging new audiences for the art history they tear down and send up.
As the pinnacle of the Friday Night Flux, The Cedar Tavern Singers AKA The Phonoréalistes will be propelled by the pyrotechnical performance feats of their special guests, including the comedy stylings of Duncan Links, belly dancing led by Aleks Bragoszewska and Lisa Pannock, and perhaps some other surprises. Where else are you going to be hit by the trombone barrage of the ’Bone Ultimatum? Nine young musicians from the Montreal jazz scene (including Kingston's own Taylor Donaldson) perform first class music, and six of them are on trombone. The ’Bone Ultimatum appear courtesy of the Apple Crisp Music Festival. A free after party at The Mansion with Tea for the Voyage will prolong the merriment.
Daniel Wong is an interdisciplinary artist from Lethbridge, Alberta working in a range of forms including installation, performance, writing, drawing, and music. He received a BFA from the University of Lethbridge in 2003 and an MFA from the University of Western Ontario in 2006.
Mary-Anne McTrowe has a BFA from the University of Lethbridge (1998) and an MFA from Concordia University in Montreal (2001). Her work has spanned a number of media, and recent interests include the crocheting of cozies for everyday objects and the proposing of ever-larger cozies for natural and man-made architecture, and performance and static work about the sasquatch.

About Inti-illimani

In 1973, while on tour in Europe, this young Chilean musical group learned that dictator Augusto Pinochet had come into power and these six young musicians found themselves in political exile. Italy became their home for the next 14 years, where they managed to not only stay together, but flourish, as a group. Although a difficult and unlikely success, the experience broadened Inti's exposure to different musical forms and styles, adding depth and complexity to their already rich texture of sounds and stories from their indigenous cultures. Today, they produce an original fusion of Latin American, jazz, Afro-Latin and Italian/European sounds.

About SERENA RYDER IN CONCERT

Serena Ryder has already left an indelible impression in Canada, where her album If Your Memory Serves You Well has been certified Gold and contributed to her winning the 2008 Juno Award for Best New Artist.

For American listeners, this sets the stage for is it o.k., her full length debut for Atlantic Records on which Ryder paints a self-portrait that's bitter in betrayal in "Sweeping the Ashes,"furious and yet not without affection in the hard-hitting "Little Bit of Red,"teasingly romantic on "Brand New Love,"struggling to understand another's pain on "Hiding Place,"even careening through cascades of contradictory emotion, almost from one word to the next, on "All for Love."

All of these moments Ryder brings to life with a performance that resonates in memory long after its last notes fade.

Passion, humor, playfulness, anger and exultation: is it o.k. offers each in abundance. But truth? Here, Ryder draws the line.

"This whole record is about realizing that the more we think we know, the less we do know,"she insists. "It's about me coming to terms with the fact that I'm imperfect, about being comfortable with feeling what I'm feeling and embracing being human in any way I possibly can."

Ryder's vision for is it o.k. took shape at the Village Recording Studios in West Los Angeles. With Grammy-winning producer John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Jason Mraz) at the controls, Ryder and an all-star backup band brought these extraordinary songs to life over a run of six or seven days.

"It was unbelievable,"she says, smiling. "They made me see my songs from an outside perspective, which is a dream for songwriters because we're so inside our own world. They brought up so many elements and emotions that I didn't even know existed in this music. It was almost like I had folded up the origami, and then they pumped air into it."

History surrounded Ryder during these sessions - literally, in the vocal booth, among the mirrors, candles, and stained glass that Stevie Nicks had included in her design for the space. But there was a sense of history being made too - a personal step forward for Ryder, and something bigger for those who would hear this music.

"To tell you the truth, I think with this album I've just started to write good songs - songs that connect with people by relating my own contradictions to them,"she says. "I'm realizing more and more that I'm not on a one-way street or even a two-way street. It's a street with an insane amount of twists and turns, and not everybody on it feels the same thing as you. I'm feeling a lot more on this music than I ever have before. I'm feeling the cold a lot colder and the heat a lot hotter. It's exciting and terrifying at the same time, because it's opening my windows a lot wider to the world."

Through those windows, the sound of is it o.k. heralds the arrival of Serena Ryder, an artist unlike any other - an artist who is ready to change your world.
